Archconfraternities

The Universal Archconfraternity of St. Philomena is an international and worldwide movement of faithful devoted to St. Philomena, Virgin and Martyr, promoting the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, the Virgin Mary.

Individual Centers, through their local autonomy, promote devotion to St. Philomena, support the work of the Shrine of St. Philomena, convey the truth that inspired our St. Philomena in the early centuries after Christ, the fundamental importance of the way St. Philomena chose to live her life, a life of heroic Christian purity.

St. Philomena could have become the Empress of Rome, the highest position of wealth, power and influence imaginable. Yet she chose to honor her promise of chastity to Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Her example and message of Heroic Christian Purity is immensely important for the youth of our time. This very young woman remained hidden in the catacombs of Priscilla until the good Lord caused her to be found again in history for the various needs of the times to come. The world is in great need of her selfless example. She is the model of purity and humility and we strive to follow her as her daughters and sons in Jesus Christ.

Our family of St. Philomena devotees around the world are united in "doing whatever Jesus will tell us" (John 2:5) as the Virgin Mary proclaimed at the Wedding at Cana.

She lovingly comes to us and leads us to Jesus.

CONSTITUTION

The Confraternity of Saint Philomena is elevated to the rank of Archconfraternity by Pope Leo XIII.

On Jan. 15, 1912, St. Pius X, renews to the Work of St. Philomena his blessing in the following words, "For the beloved members of the Archconfraternity of St. Philomena and Blessed J. M. Vianney, with the fervent wish that, through the intercession of the One or the Other, the Lord may be prodigal of his greatest graces for all. We cordially send the Apostolic Blessing."

To definitively affirm the cult of St. Philomena and put an end to certain idle discussions, on May 21, 1912, S. Pius X erected the venerable Archconfraternity of St. Philomena into a Universal Archconfraternity, with the Apostolic Brief "Pias Fidelium Societates," in which he clearly specified, "We decree that the present writing be and remain always stable, valid and effective, and that it receive and obtain its full and entire effects, so it must be regularly judged and defined, and if it proceeds otherwise, it will be null and void, whatever its authority...."

Pope Leo XIII

Currently, the work or universal Archconfraternity of St. Philomena continues in the Shrine of Mugnano del Cardinale, the seat of the Philomena cult in the world. Very important has been the work and commitment of the Holy Curé of Ars who is the second patron of the Work.

The Rector of the Shrine of St. Philomena of Mugnano del Cardinale is the spiritual father of the entire Universal Archconfraternity of St. Philomena and is its Honorary President.

The Work of the Universal Archconfraternity of Saint Philomena is an association of prayer and apostolate that proposes:

-       The commitment of life to the Gospel of Christ following the example of St. Philomena and spreading her cult.

-       The interest of the greatest number of people in the apostolic intentions, which Pope Leo XIII and St. Pius X recommended under the patronage of St. Philomena

and the Holy Curé of Ars:

-       The Christian education of children and youth.

-       Prayer for Vocations and the sanctification of the clergy.
